I’ve photographed weddings in Bavaria for twelve years — at lakes, on mountains, in front of castles. Again and again, international couples ask me the same questions. This guide answers them, honestly and without the tourist-brochure gloss.

There are two ways to get married in Bavaria, and this choice shapes everything else.
A legally binding civil ceremony at a German registry office (Standesamt). Foreigners can marry in Germany, but the paperwork is substantial: birth certificates with apostille, certificates of no impediment, certified translations, and processing time that can take several months. Some documents expire after six months, so timing matters. The ceremony itself takes place at the Standesamt — some Bavarian registry offices offer beautiful venues, including lakeside and mountain locations.
Best for: couples with time, patience for bureaucracy, or a personal reason to have the legal act in Germany.
You handle the legal marriage at home — often a 20-minute courthouse appointment — and celebrate your real wedding in Bavaria: a free ceremony (freie Trauung) with a celebrant, anywhere you’re allowed to stand. Mountain peak, lakeshore, castle grounds. No German paperwork, no waiting, full freedom in location and style.
Best for: almost everyone marrying from abroad. Same vows, same rings, same mountains — none of the bureaucracy. Nobody looking at your photos will ever know the difference.

Public lakeshores and mountain trails: generally free to use for a small ceremony. Castle grounds and parks are different — Neuschwanstein, Linderhof and other state-owned sites require photography permits, and commercial photography inside is restricted. Rules and fees change, so this needs checking for your specific date and spot. Rough, honest numbers for a two-person intimate wedding: photography & film from €1,900 (my packages — most couples choose the combined photo+film option at €2,800), celebrant €800–1,900, hair & makeup €300–600, planner from around €1,500 depending on scope, plus permits, flowers and your travel. A beautifully done intimate wedding in Bavaria typically lands between €6,000 and €12,000 all-in — a fraction of an average wedding, for a day that’s entirely yours.

Yes, it’s possible, but document requirements are extensive and processing takes months. Most non-EU couples choose the symbolic route instead.
